            As you all know, I am from Southern California, the proverbial healthiest place on Earth. Being the home for many celebrities, forward thinkers, Hollyweirdos, and Sun-loving hipsters, it is no accident that information and access regarding diet and bodily health is abundant. Seems like everybody and there mom is on a juice cleanse these days. Already being a Vegan, that consumes mostly whole organic foods, I am no stranger to a ‘Glowing Greens’ blend, ‘Shakti Chai’ shake, or even a ‘Lemon-Ginger Immune fortifier’. As my quest continues to maximize the utility of my mind, I am open to even the most far-fetched purifying mechanisms.

             I’ve recently begun studying certain teachings of renowned herbalist, Djehuty Ma’at Ra, who also advocates a natural whole food diet, asserting that our diets as humans are often the primary source of health, mental clarity, and daily habits. I know this to be true first hand, and this is often an emphasis in my presentations, regardless of the venue or audience. I have even coined the phrase “What feeds the body leads the body,” which is evident in food, but also true for all ingestibles of which we find ourselves in the presence; may they be friends, books, music or otherwise.

             Doing my best to stay on topic, I went Djehuty’s Hollywood location on Santa Monica, and met two beautiful (physically and spiritually) women working there, Janaba and Hope. I immediately got a sense that they were in attunement with the herbs and other natural remedies Djehuty provides. Their demeanor and good humor were appreciated upon my entrance, and their personalities felt very familiar before I even alluded to my interest in herbal detox. I am always interested to see if employees really vouch for a company or a product when the boss isn’t around. You can usually tell a lot just by their body language after asking a question.               I bought some pinhole reader glasses designed to exercise muscles in the eye, improving vision and the Full Body Detox, which has blood, lymphatic, cardiovascular, digestive, lung, and adrenal components, designed to repair and rejuvenate the body to a more pristine and youthful state. Trying not to sound too much like an off-brand infomercial, I have experienced a renewed sense of clarity and heightened awareness(or my sense and surroundings). I have noticed my body is more electric, as I have been finger-shocking people with greater frequency. I have noticed increased virility and endurance in all areas of my life. Most importantly for me has been the more immediate access to creative energy to better share gifts and spread a message I believe is worthy of my Human Family’s Atūn-tion.

        I know you all are marveling at my catchy and original title, haha. Spending 5 years (and counting) playing professional football on the east coast really helps me appreciate home every time I land at LAX or Burbank. For the last few weeks all my friends have been complaining of the persistent heat wave that was consistent with the disruption of a seasonal storm. While I felt for them, because of the unusual heat, I wasn’t as empathetic as normal, because despite my safe haven, I was left jealous from the extended winter we survived in Buffalo. Often when I land in Southern California, and not too distracted by rush-hour traffic, I am enamored by the mountains and the vast scenery available from vantage of any Los Angeles freeway. This time was no different, as I marveled at the shaded brown and green marbling foothills upholding the southern region like a backbone. When I got home to Altadena, I could hardly put my bag down before I raced into the backyard, nearly tripping on the door panels to see our new family garden flourishing with the fruits of our labor. When I left for Buffalo, the adolescent garden was still deciding whether or not it wanted to take us seriously, but thanks to the blood, sweat, and mud of my Parents while I was away, we had a plethora of zucchini, cucumber, tomatoes, collards, string beans, swiss chard, beets and even a watermelon upon my return. Safe to say that I didn’t have to worry about rush-hour getting to the grocery store (too corny to erase).

         The harvest was impressive, but I was happiest with my Pops dedication to the work. He probably wouldn’t even call it work, considering all the fun he seems to find soaking up the essence of Mother Earth. Seriously, it made me feel good he was able to find an enjoyable pastime why my mom and I are out of town with our jobs. I felt/feel a great peace of mind knowing that I don’t need to be home all the time when I am in town.

Raised semi-pescatarian, other than a Sloppy-Joe accident in Pre-School, I did not consume red-meat until I was 14 years old, pork even later. So when I began to adopt an increasingly plant-based diet a couple years ago, witnessed via my girlfriend, it was a fairly smooth transition to add chicken to that list of officially forbidden foods. Fish, milk, and eggs seemed much tougher to eliminate, especially when finding out how many foods are made with milk and cheese derivatives.

One week my girlfriend and I challenged ourselves to eat only raw plant-based foods. This came after we visited a friend’s house and witnessing this Vegan-bread Genius Baby that made everyone feel a little inadequate, and sharing raw vegan tacos with the parents. Still to this day, these were the best tacos I’ve ever eaten, INCLUDING those with animal meat. We watched her build the tacos out just a few raw plant-based ingredients as if it was some Renaissance culinary masterpiece. We were so moved by the meal that over the next several weeks, we felt even looking at cooked food to be treacherous.

Instantly, what we experienced, which was consistent with the aftermath of our Brooklyn vegan double-date, was an incredible boost in energy that sustained us through the entire day. No afternoon naps, no ‘Itus’, just a heightened sense of mental clarity and greater body functionality. I lead a very active lifestyle, obviously, and I found a wide and growing gap between the energy levels of myself and my other Giants teammates.

Since becoming officially Vegan, I no longer get sick, my five fundamental sense have become sharper, I’m am much less prone to injury, I require very little eating because of the nutrient dense foods, I have a greater appreciation for the natural world around me, and I have harnessed a number of unwritten Universal truths that I can only share in person. Veganism has been a keynote factor in my becoming a more sensitive and enlightened Ramses.

         As you can see, Afrika has many names and many stories. Often the biggest plague to the condition of certain parts of the continent is the story told, “History vs. OUR-story.” While all renditions of the world’s richest continent have relevance, sometimes we find that a colonizing group’s propensity to tell the story of another People can compromise the foundation and customs on which great civilizations were built, leaving little to no evidence of their existence in contemporary times, further alienating those People from self-worth, knowing no memory of pivotal contributions to today’s thriving civilization.

         As you can tell, I get passionate when it comes to indigenous peoples throughout the world in the land with which they identify themselves. The beauty of this trip was that it was devoid of any geopolitical motives or war-torn areas, or any unrest whatsoever, at least to my amateur eyes. My trip to Malawi and South Afraka was caressed in a beauty I find difficult to describe in words. My girlfriend and I were invited by ex-football player turned economic guru and global ambassador, Jack Brewer. Jack has a number of relationships with several countries, traveling the world, encouraging economic growth and community health through youth sports. He has also built schools in certain countries. He is a mentor and a worthy hero in his own right. (http://brewersports.com/ )

         The official purpose of the trip was to give out several hundred soccer balls in Malawi, setup hearing aides to for children who had never before heard in their lives, and visit with the Mandela and Banda (Malawi President) families, also witnessing another futbol match versus Brazil. Each of these things was achieved, and was paradigm shifting in and of themselves; I am very proud to have played a role. However, none of these experiences came close to that first day we spent in the Lilongwe village.

          We arrived to the small town just outside Lilongwe. To see the entire village, waiting for us before beginning an enormous futbol match, welcome us with radiant hearts, I could not help but to weep. I cried for the dissonance of 600 years in a matter of minutes. The feelings that flowed through me covered the spectrum of human emotions. I even felt guilty crying as if I had too much privilege in my life to be deserving of tears, but those feelings dissipated as I wept for the overwhelming embrace of a people reunited. When I arose from a soaked seat placed shamefully in the shaded bleachers, I was unanimously offered a place within the hearts of these spiritually advanced people. Their way of life was so humbling and matter-of-fact. It was as if they were incapable of fathoming the dissension We the western world project across the globe. It was as if the tone of their native tongue echoed the theme of one of my favorite Lauryn Hill renditions, “It could all be so simple, but you’d rather make it hard.”
